Lakes

With miles and miles of rivers, lake fishing for trout in Colorado is an underused resource.  Lakes (or stillwaters can offer less-pressured fish, and oftentimes more solitude.  And each year some of the largest fish caught in the state come from Colorado’s stillwaters.

Stillwater fishing can be done from the bank or a boat.  The boat-style of fishing is very popular in Europe and other parts of the world, and often referred to as “loch-style”.  In this style, anglers drift with a windsock, or drogue, trailing behind and cast downwind.  Fly lines with various sink rates, from floating to quick-sinking are used.  At certain times, hatches can bring trout to the surface to feed.  More often, subsurface retrieves entice a take.
